I was searching online the other day for a roundup of cycling magazines. As I couldn’t find a good list anywhere I decided to create a list here. I hope this is helpful for anyone looking to expand their cycling knowledge through the magazines. I personally regularly flick through Cycling Plus and occasionally Cycling Active.
General cycling magazines
- Appeals mainly to the the everyday cyclist and the higher performance cyclists
- Delivered monthly
- Inside you will find: General cycling news, advice on nutrition and health, technique (e.g. stretching), cycling routes, equipment tests (e.g. this week it covered shorts and helmets.) Bike reviews (e.g. this week was four bikes under £700).
- Appeals mainly to the everyday cyclist
- Delivered monthly
- Inside you will find: quick roundup of general cycling news, in-depth bike reviews, roundup review of certain bike accessories (e.g. this week it was 7 of the best saddle packs), fitness, technique, cycling routes and events.
- Appeals mainly to performance cyclists
- Delivered weekly
- Inside you will find: Plenty of general cycling news and from the professional circuit. Training advice, small gear test section, cycling routes and some sportive coverage.
- Appeals to performance cyclists
- Delivered monthly
- US based
Mountain bike magazines
- Delivered monthly
- Inside you will find: Plenty of great mountain bike rides, technique, bike tests and gear reviews
- Delivered monthly
- Inside you will find: Plenty of great mountain bike rides, technique, plenty of gear reviews, bike tests and maintenance tips
- Delivered monthly
- Inside you will find: Great mountain bike routes, news, expert advice on tackling mountain bike trails, fantastic pictures from trails, gear tests and bike tests.
- Published 8 times a year
- Inside you will find: Bike tests, product tests, plenty of column like features, great mountain bike rides and technique
Professional cycling magazines
- Appeals to people interested in the professional sport side of cycling
- Delivered monthly
- Inside you will find: plenty of news stories about professional cyclists, bike tests and routes
Note there are also plenty of noteworthy cycling magazines that are available online. These include Urban Velo, Rouleur and Momentum. I think I’ve covered most of the mainstream magazines here (At least the UK cycling magazines) but if you know of any that are definitely worthy of a mention then add them in the comments!
Add to these Urban Velo (www.urbanvelo.org), available both online and by subscription. It’s an excellent little magazine that focuses on recreational and commuter riding.
Don’t forget “A to B” and “Velovision”. Excellent for everyday cyclists and available in paper or online.
And there’s “Momentum” – “The magazine for self-propelled people.” http://www.momentumplanet.com – available on line, and via subscription, with the focus on urban cycling.
How about the CTC Magazine, ‘Cycle’, published monthly (http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3587 published monthly) or the Sustrans’ magazine, the Network, published bi-monthly (http://www.sustrans.org.uk/resources/publications/the-network-magazine)?
Definitely add AtoB for folding bikes and electric bikes and lots more.

When I was in Australia last year I picked up Ride Cycling Review, it’s really very good!
Add the C2C magazine, and I think we’ve pretty much got the whole list tied up. (just don’t add the Sustrans bi-monthly leaflet)

The Ride Journal isn’t really a magazine, but it probably has the best selection of cycling journalism/stories/photojournalism around. Far better than the glossies. It will appeal to anyone who likes any form of cycling! Only quarterly though, I think, or whenever they collect enough quality articles.
If you’re looking at Cycling Plus, then this months one is available as a double package with Triathlon Plus .. Well worth a look.

also try Fixed Mag – its free magazine available quaterly about riding fixed and single speed in London and the major cities around the world. Its available at Independant bike shops like 14Bike, Bike LAne Cycles and Condor. Best thing is – its free
I love Road.cc it is a brilliant website and they’ve a travel section now too.
There’s also the cycling quarterly Boneshaker (www.boneshakermag.com): “a celebration of cycling and the people who do it.” It’s UK-based but has stories from all over the world…
You have omitted “Cycling World”, which is delightful magazine, though it can be difficult to find.

You also missed Sportif Magazine, second highest figures in the UK at 33,600 copies in July and free.
Unfortunately a few of these aren’t going. Which is surprising given the upturn in cycling and cycle-spend over the last year or two.
Momentum is gone and velovision just throws up an error page. At least Urban Velo have left their back issues up even if they aren’t publishing any new ones.
BTW Still can’t believe that RideBMX aren’t printing any more.

I tend to not read too many magazines and find things like cycling weekly a little short of inspiration. I read Cyclist though which in my opinion leads the crowd. Great quality magazine with really good features. Highly recommend.
