Back pains related to cycling? Free test of Heat Wraps

Andreas · Feb 17, 2012 · 11 Comments

I was contacted recently about the ThermaCare Heat Wraps which are part of the Pfizer portfolio. They offered me 100 free Heat Wraps to test and I thought it would be a good idea to do a group test on these and see what everyone thinks. If it helps then great, come back and report that here in the comments. If it doesn’t, then again come back and leave a comment.

When I asked on Twitter quite a few people responded with comments on back pains so I think this is quite a worthwhile test.

To get the wraps you have to go to their Facebook page and click on the Back Experts section. The unique code exclusive to London Cyclist readers is: A85080145B60

You’ll need to pass a short medical survey first to qualify.

Look forward to hearing what people think.

I know people generally like a quick and easy fix, but a professional bike fitting — and maybe some core strengthening/Pilates — would be far better. Make the pain go away, prevent it from returning, maintain a fun active lifestyle far longer. Just sayin’.

Good comment – this was my first reservation about this product. None the less – I thought it was worth throwing out there to see what everyone thinks.

I believe if you “like” the page then you’ll see the option to enter the code..

I liked the page – then you have to give the access to your email etc. Then they told me I didn’t qualify. I’m a bit suspicious to be honest – Im off to unlike em.

I ‘liked’ the page, entered the code and then completed short survey and they said they are on their way to me…@Nick maybe something in your responses meant you could not qualify.

I have had back pain on and off for a little over two years now. I am active and otherwise, consider myself in good shape. I totally agree with comments above about increasing core strength and other such methods, I find swimming really helps, will be the best form of prevention.

However, something to use for short term treatment when pack pain does flare up would be brilliant. I am looking forward to seeing how these help, or not.

My personal view on these kind of hot pad things is, regardless of how effective they are, they are not a very sustainable product as they are one-use only. Very wasteful. Smaller glove-insert versions of these are incredibly popular in Japan and just get binned after use. Millions and millions of them. I’m not keen to see Britain embrace these.

Perhaps for use during a full day cycling or as relief after sport, but definitely not as a daily commute product. Amongst all the other great reasons, I like to cycle my bike as an environmental plus point in my life so this type of product wouldn’t be compatible with that aim!

If you publish a follow up article with the findings on how well they work then please address the sustainability issue too 😉
