A Very interesting book by itself but used with gps its great. Its taken me a little time to figure out how to use this book with the gps coordinates provided, but now I can use my iphone to read the book and navigate its truly brilliant
I think it’s a terrific piece of work, love the way it’s presented and the routes are a great spread of quirky through to useful through to challenging. A few things though, “Jewelry” is I believe spelt “Jewellery” although maybe it’s an alternative spelling I’m not familiar with.
In the Alpine London section I would have thought Highgate West Hill was worthy of mention, as used in final stage of Tour of Britain in 2006. I personally would have liked a review of the most challenging ‘hills’ in London in this section. I get my hill-climbing kicks doing laps of Canonbie Road in Forest Hill when I don’t have time to get to Kent so am putting this forward for future inclusion if you think this section would interest people. Personally I think it has the edge on Highgate West Hill as very little traffic and well set up for laps, although not as long.
When I clicked on the Google Maps link give for the London – Chichester route description I get a choice of four exotic locations for the Unknown Road, but not, I think, including the intended one.
Looking forward to getting out on some of these routes, great work!

Looks very useful for someone like me who ends up riding the same routes again and again due to lack of imagination and being disinclined to sit around researching rides when I could be doing them! Hi Phil. Regarding the route to the city centre I have an article written here that is called “Finding London Cycle Routes”. Have a look for it and use some of the tools there. The one I would highly recommend is the online camden cyclists resource that shows you where there are cycle paths in London

Bagged the london cycle routes book last week and cracked off #8 (cant really give it away can I?) on a chilly Easter Sunday. Gonna say the cycle was OK – some interesting stops and a couple of nice pubs. An area we’d never visited before which I guess is what the guide is all about! Glad I downloaded the GPS file – very useful. Looking forward to 10, 11 and 16 next! Top stuff.

I have been looking at the london cycle routes book with interest, and will soon(!) get out on my bike to try out some of the routes.
I’ve only recently moved to London, and haven’t yet had time to get on my bike and explore, what with decoration, finding my bearings and so on.
The “Easy” routes look good as a starter for me, so I’ll give them a go and let you have more feedback.

This captures the pleasure of cycling in London and extends it with a load of suggestions. The excitement comes through just reading through the routes always allowing for opening up your own variations and new areas to explore. If you don’t get the buzz of cycling in London, particularly central London, take it on trust and have a look at this book. Nice book with interesting routes: I’m looking forward to doing more of them. Ideas for improvements: the maps, although good, could be labelled better – it’s not instantly clear where they link up to each other, and it’s similarly not clear where the ‘attractions’ on each ride are marked. Also, the higlighting colour doesn’t come out too well on a (bog-standard office) colour printer. Minor nits, very well done though; loving the gpx and kml trails. (loading them onto an android device was a challenge but do-able in the end…)
Hey James – in the new version of the London Cycle Routes eBook I sent out a few weeks ago (and that people get when they download) I’ve improved the maps and added clear instructions for the Android and other mobile phones.
Great e-book – well worth 8 pounds. The gpx files work nicely with the breadcrumb trail feature on the Garmin Edge 705. If you are looking to publish more routes, what I’d (selfishly) like to see is some 50-100 miles loops starting and ending in central London. I kind of feel like a cheat getting the train back!

It’s taken me a while to get around to posting a comment, Andreas, but that’s partly because I’ve been trying out the cycle routes in your terrific little book! Not only have I had a great time following new routes to old destinations – haven’t had a chance to simply explore yet – but it inspired me to take a free cycle training course in my borough. I learned a whole lot of rules of the road that I wasn’t aware of previously, so thanks for that recommendation. I also followed your advice and took the cycle maintenance course with Digger and Diego. Good fun and an excellent learning experience. I couldn’t be happier to have discovered London Cyclist and all it includes. I’m out on my bike so much more now and loving it. A thousand thanks, Andreas!

Finally got round to doing one of the rides today, having bought the guide a while ago. My partner’s 13 year old daughter is staying and I thought it would be a great thing for us all to do together and I was right! only problem is that I can’t access the GPS files now: Adobe reader ‘can’t access the file because either it is not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged’. Please help! I may have done something wrong when I originally downloaded the book?
Hi Nicki, Adobe Reader can’t open the GPS files – it can only open the PDF files. There’s instructions inside the eBook (See introduction) for how you can use the GPS files.

Hi Andreas, a great e-book and a great update. Have just done the Epping Forest Loop ride and have one particular comment. The part of the route along epping road/high road is along a straight fast road that is very busy and would not be that suitable for all people. There is an alternative off road route which is suitable for hybrids and I road it on my road bike (25mm tyres) OK. When you come to the top of ivy Chimneys road do a left turn rather than a right turn, immediatelty after crossing the M25 do a right turn go to the end of the road, go straight on a narrow track and after a short distance take the left track. This is quite wide. Eventually it crosses epping road, cross the road and take a left before the car park, follow this track until it meets up with your route jsut after the big roundabout. I have a GPS track if anyone would like it.

When I have received my Christmas gift from your newsletter as the 7 great routes around London, I just open 02 Tower Bridge to Greenwich Park. It was pleasant surprise for me because one is identical to my favorite walking route along the Thames. I admire of Thames Path walk in boiling hot days. Hi could someone please let me know how many routes are over 40 miles, the shortest distance my 8 yo would want to cycle?
Are these rides suitable for leisure cyclists outside of London? I live about 40 miles north of London and have, for example, started to ride down the Lea Valley which is good. Would these rides be OK for me? Is it possible to get an idea of where the ridres are at least in closeness to Central London. A ride round Box Hill is not beyond my capability.
Hey Colin nearly all the rides are within the M25 ring. It should be fine to reach and there’s quite a few leisure routes around central London that should be of interest.

Hi, i’ve just sent a note saying that the routes are great but that the gpx files aren’t tracks in the sense that I know – i.e. gps coordinates at very frequent intervals along the track. Here’s a sample track recorded during a recent short ride starting in South Oxford (with reps on one of the hills). It can be viewed at the bikeroutetoaster.com site. Hi Andreas, further to my last comment, I’ve just imported one of your gpx files to the bikeroutetoaster.com site and it produced a good cycle track which I was then able to download, view and edit if I wanted, in routeconverter.de (software you can download) and load onto my Garmin Etrex Problem solved – thanks for the files; they’ll be a great help.

some nice routes there eg the grand union. I have a special one that loops round Richmond park and Wimbledon common…avoids the roads for a LONG time without duplication .
Hello. Great job but VERY disappointed my local area–Barking– has a great wodge of central London blocking it out!! Even if you havent included routezs around our lakes parks and rivers yet, I hate not being able to see your routes in the context of me GETTING to the routes. Please give the central area its own “page” and stop HIDING Barking! Its only zone 4 and you spread much wider south west.
