Got any old bikes or parts taking up space? Donate them to Re Cycle!

Andreas · Aug 2, 2012 · 3 Comments

“Millions of bicycles are thrown away or left to rust in the UK while millions of people in Africa are forced by lack of transport to walk up to 4-hours per day, to school, work or fetching water.”

“Re~Cycle ships donated bikes (41,000 thus far), tools and spare parts to Africa, where partner organisations refurbish and distribute them.”

If you’ve got any old bike bits taking up space in your flat and you are wondering what to do with them then you can donate to Re~Cycle:

The founder, Merlin, has informed me they are opening a new location at 250 City Road, half way between Angel and Old Street tube stations in a weeks time.

Other locations are listed on the website. Merlin is also looking for any volunteers to help out.

I think this is a commendable organisation. We donated three bikes that had been abandoned at my work basement garage in central London since last November – bizarrely all were Apollo-brand bikes (I’m told this is Halford’s own brand), two of which were in pretty knackered condition, while one looked barely ridden. We tried to trace the owners for months, but got nowhere. Whose they were remains a mystery. But all we had to do was wheel them round to Action Bikes on Embankment, which is a collection point, and they were off to be refurbished and sent in a shortly-leaving container to Africa. Easy as. Recommended.

No way. Don’t send them to Africa! There are lots of people in London who need them. Have you guys heard of Baisikel? http://www.irr.org.uk/news/baisikel-calls-for-volunteers-and-bikes/

Hi , I have a small trailer Load of bike parts including about 15 odd wheels , if you can pick it all up , it’s free, , you can’t pick and choose bits it must all go as one lot , I’m based on isle of Dogs e14, if I don’t get any feedback for this it will all go to The scrap yard , but that would be a waste , it needs to go ASAP
