Thousands of cyclists expected to attend the Big Ride this Saturday

Andreas · Apr 24, 2012 · 4 Comments

On Saturday the 28th of April, thousands of cyclists will converge on the streets of London outside Parliament Square to support streets designed for all.

imageThe ride plan is as follows: At 11am, cyclists will assemble near Marble Arch. At 12pm the ride begins towards Parliament Square and then ends at Victoria Embankment around 2pm. The roads will be closed off to allow the ride to take place safely. Those cycling can join one of the many feeder rides.

The Big Ride comes at the perfect time just as the Mayoral Elections are at the forefront of Londoners minds. It reminds the candidates of how many people are looking for a mayor that will deliver safer roads for cycling.

It is part of the London Cycling Campaign’s “Love London, Go Dutch” strategy which has also involved gathering over 34,000 signatures for their petition.

Outside of the London Cycling Campaign’s efforts there’s also been the Londoners On Bikes campaign which to date has 5,347 sign ups. Also, more recently, there’s been a widespread campaign to boycott Addison Lee with die-ins and petitions organised.

In all, it’s clear that more and more people are demanding that London’s congested roads are not simply handed over to drivers. They need to be designed with the needs of a wide group of users, of which cyclists are becoming a vocal part of.

I have given up cycling in London because the odds are stacked against us cyclists, as evidenced by my recent prosecution by the Police, who mislead the Court in order to gain a successful conviction, with me being charged £365!

You can read my detailed write up of this case at http://cyclistsbeware.blogspot.co.uk/
    Hopefully it will help you.

    Regards

    John
