Just shared this on my Twitter but thought it would probably be of interest here on the blog too..

Cycle Gaz who runs The Views of a Cyclist from Croydon was yesterday hit by a car as he cycled on the bus lane. Here is the YouTube of the accident:

Fortunately he has escaped without serious injuries. As Gaz said in his comments on YouTube on a good day he may have seen this coming. The video acts as a good reminder to be as careful as possible especially in the wintery conditions. In this situation there is little Gaz could have done differently.

The video is also a good demonstration of the value of having a helmet camera to record your cycling. Something that I’ve noticed is becoming more common amongst London’s cyclists.

In this quick, 3 minute repair I demonstrate how you can replace your handlebar grips. These grips need replacing when they start to fade. It’s a nice, cheap upgrade (£15 – £25) you can do yourself that will provide a more comfortable feel for your hands.

The repair is taken from the Bike Doctor App for the iPhone and Android that I co-created.

What you’ll need to replace handlebar grips:

Essentials:

Allen key – should already have this!

New grips – in the video I’m testing out the Ergon Grips which give a decent upgrade to your comfort and put less strain on your wrists.

Possibly:

Hairspray which is used as glue for old handlebar grips

WD-40 – if the handlebar grips can’t be loosened by hand

Screwdriver – again only needed if the handlebar grips are struggling to come off

Why you may want to replace handlebar grips:

If you fancy giving your bike a bit of a trendier look

If your old grips are starting to crumble in your hands

If you buy new handlebar grips that provide better comfort

This post is hot off the heels of a recent survey I have been running (You still have a chance to leave your opinion here) that so far shows that a lot of people want me to keep everyone up to date on London cycling news.

I’ll keep this post brief as I am at London Stansted Airport waiting to fly to Greece and I’m enjoying a pre-flight Stella (Mmmmm good!). I received an e-mail this morning off TfL about a video they are sending out to 140,000 cyclists in London about how to stay safe on the roads. After the recent spate of road deaths I am not at all surprised that this video has been put together. It is interesting to note that the majority of accidents have been involved with so called Heavy Goods Vehicles. To seasoned cyclists I am sure these tips are not necessary but none the less may be a good refresher. The other video of note by TfL is the popular do the test advert.

Give the new video a watch and let me know what you think.

What annoys you as a cyclist? Is it the n00b things other cyclists do? Is it getting wolf whistled at and having men trying to look up your skirt while you cycle? Is it the dogs that attack you as you try to get from a to b? Or perhaps for you its the cars that don’t keep their distance? For one London Cyclist reader, Hanja, who e-mailed me today it is the latter. Through sheer ingenuity Hanja has produced the solution. It gives me great pleasure to present to you the Arm Against Harm:

Unfortunately I cannot see this fantastic idea ever seeing the light of day due to lack of approval by the relevant authorities. Speaking of light however does brings me nicely onto the second part of this post. Michael Mandiberg uses retroreflective vinyl on his bike to be more visible at night. Check out the effect below:

Video adverts

7. Test your awareness
I really enjoyed this advert – it makes drivers think not just about the other major road users but also about cyclists that you may not be looking out for.

I believe these campaigns can be attributed to M&C Saatchi. A special thanks to John Levick at TfL for sending me a copy of the poster adverts.
