Are you taking part in a charity ride this year?

There’s no shortage of charity cycling events. All for excellent causes (insert plug for our current London Cyclist Sponsor – Capital to Coast here) and many of my friends have picked this year to do running events such as half marathons.

I want to know are you taking part in any charity rides this year or have you done previously?

good luck boon and john! I did Nightrider last year (for Compassion in World Farming) and it was brilliant but VERY difficult towards the end, crystal palace is a bit hilly to say the least, be warned :)

    Hiya,

A group of us are cycling from Birmingham to Berlin only stopping at places beginning at B! It will be about 900 miles in 11 days, all money goes straight to Cancer Research….a cause that is very personal to all our riders and is in loving memory of Bruce Wall.

I’m doing the 50K version of the DIVA100 ride this Sunday. I got knocked off my bike in December and I’m still recovering physically but I hope to do it in under 2.5 hours.
Good luck everyone doing rides this summer!

    Hi folks

    2008 – London/Paris for Macmillan Cancer Support

    2009 – London/Paris for Macmillan Cancer Support

2009 – Ride Blenheim Palace – 60 miles for Macmillan Cancer Support

2010 – Prostate Cancer Research Tour of Britain Stage

2011 – I’m having a year off but supporting a friend, Mark Alden, who’s doing a privately organised LeJog for Macmillan’s with only his girlfriend and a trusty car for support. See him at http://www.justgiving.com/markalden – go on, help him raise that last 5%!

2012 – Maybe I’ll get round to doing my huge ride in favour of National Coastwatch Institution (www.nci.org.uk) riding round the coastline from Fleetwood in the NW, via Wales, Cornwall the South Coast, the East Coast and up to Sunderland to visit each NCI station. But maybe I won’t – numbers like 2000 (kilometers) have a way of daunting my enthusiasm!

Good luck to everyone supporting a charity by getting on their bikes – especially those who don’t normally ride one!

    Mike :-)

    Hey folks,

Our team of 21 inspirational young cyclists just completed a 14 day Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge!

Wow, quite the adventure. Check out our blog posts @ http://brakethecycle.org.uk for full details, plus photos of our tour.

We’re over half way towards raising £15,000 for 2 amazing grassroots charities, AfriKids and the Otesha Project UK.

The Otesha Project are a UK based cycling chairty who work with young people, introducing them to issues of sustainability through their Otesha play and inspiring a love of cycling and nature. They’ve been hit hard by grant cuts need your support!

Doing the ‘Independant’ 100K London – Brighton ride on September 10th for ‘Medical Action Research For Kids’….First charity ride I’ve ever done…Not so sure about riding up ‘Ditchling Beacon’ though! :-)

    • Nick 06/05/2011 at 12:49 pm #

You’ll regret not cycling up Ditchling – such a buzz when you reach the top!

I did London to Brighton last year – walking challenge this year – six peaks and snowdon horseshoe in 2 days for Air Ambulance charity – http://www.justgiving.com/sevenhighs

    • Mike Smith 06/05/2011 at 5:44 pm #

      Ditchling Beacon….
Ride it and risk a heart attack or push the bike up it and get a bad backa – choices, choices, choices!

  17. Oliwer 06/05/2011 at 11:58 am #

I’m riding, next weekend, a 600 mile route from Dorking to Edinburgh. It’s run by a fantastic organisation called Ride2Raise, see more details here http://www.ride2raise.co.uk/ as they have events running through the year.

You can follow all of the news and details of how to enter events here

    http://twitter.com/#!/Ride2Raise

Ride2Raise aims to promote cycling as a healthy and eco way to not only fundraise but also to keep fit and healthy. The team that run it are very professional and give those who need it the support and encouragement, they are really experienced and ultimately…they have a lot of fun doing it!

It’s relatively new so please do pass on the word as cycling becomes even stronger and more popular in this country.

    Ollie.

This year I’m doing 3 charity rides for the British Heart Foundation. The London to Brighton in June, The Goodwood Ride in July and the London to Hastings in August.

My Dad died of heart disease and I’ve come from being a super morbidly obese non-cyclist to a super fit cyclist that’s 7.5 stone lighter than I was last year.

    http://www.justgiving.com/toby2011

  19. Craig Pollard 06/05/2011 at 12:59 pm #

Yup, we’ve got a team of six who are cycling 12,000 miles from London to Cape Town, leaving 7th August. It’ll take us a year to complete and we’re aiming to raise £100,000 for street children projects in Africa.

Our first day is a fully organised London to Brighton, places are limited but if you want to register then visit http://www.cycleafrica.org/london-to-brighton!!

    Cheers!

    Craig

  20. Paul 06/05/2011 at 1:48 pm #

Me and my partner are having fun adapting to riding our tandem and decided last year we would join in with the nightride, like a few others here. We were thrilled when we found that although all the places were gone we could join in on behalf of mind – our page is below

    http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AnnieandPaul

Will be great if anyone does donate and I’m going to visit a few of the other nightriders pages and donate to them now I think!

Be interesting to read a feature on nightrides – the Dynamo is coming up too soon!

From 26th May to 9th June 2011 I will cycle the El Cid trail from Bilbao to Valencia with some friends – the IMPS. We will be cycling around 50 miles every day, with some challenging hills. I will be riding a total of 587 miles.

You will have heard of El Cid and perhaps even seen gun-loving Charlton Heston play him. As he (EC not CH) seems to have spent a lot of his time on earth killing people, I would like you to donate a little to the Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT) to help even the score. Every penny you contribute will go straight to CAAT as I am paying for all my own cycle ride expenses.

CAAT tackles one of the key root causes of conflict and instability around the world: Britain’s weapon sales abroad. Every hour, 35 people are killed by armed conflict. I’m cycling to help end Britain’s role as one of the five biggest arms exporters in the world.

Please sponsor me today and inspire me to keep on going when it gets tough! You can sponsor me per mile or for the whole trip. Let’s remind El Cid and his kind that War is really Not the Answer. Please go to my donations page here:

    http://my.artezglobal.com/personalPage.aspx?SID=326644&Lang=en-CA.

    Thanks!

Yes – my boyfriend and I are currently 800 miles into our 1,800 mile NYC to Miami bike ride on behalf of a great homelessness charity.

I’m blogging about it here –

And raising funds here – http://www.justgiving.com/Silka-Kennedy-Todd0

Right, time to cycle another 70 miles…

loads of people riding london to paris, is there a cycle route to paris that keeps you on track, it could be a goal one day for me possibly, not right now but in the future when my fitness levels are much higher and i think i may also need to buy some semi slick tyres for my mtb i guess

    • Trevor 07/05/2011 at 2:27 pm #

I did it last year on an 18 year old MTB (with slicks) and it was perfectly do-able even at a mediocre level of fitness.

  25. Pete Clark 06/05/2011 at 8:16 pm #

I’ve done the London Bikeathon, Palace to Palace and the London to Brighton in recent years. This year I felt I needed a new challenge so I’m stepping up to London to Paris (like many others it seems). My charity is the wonderful Child Bereavement Charity.

Maybe one day I’ll do one that doesn’t start or finish in London!

    Good luck to all!!

  26. Jess 06/05/2011 at 9:04 pm #

I’m doing the Nightrider too, for the Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture. Having only started cycling in January I’m a bit worried, particularly with all this mention of hills!

I done the London Bikeathon (26 miles) last year and still had some steam left in the engine so going to take on the 52 mile route this year Sunday 26th June.

Can’t be done with paying fees and begging for money so I’ll be volunteering as a bicycle marshall on the Moonwalk on the 14th night. Followed the link on here so, thank you Andreas :-))) -A

Well done and good luck to everyone.

We, the Coast to Coast Cycle Club – Chris Batten, Lee Simpson, Stuart Flatt & Colin Richardson, are cycling from Land’s End to Norwich via the South coast. 840 miles in total. 11th – 18th June 2011.

We’re doing it to raise money for Big C cancer charity, our aim is £20k

I’ll be doing the London to Brighton (for first time) for the British Heart Foundation with a team from work.
Lost both parents to heart disease – it’s surprising how common it is.
    All/any contributioins welcome!

Heart disease is the bigger cause of death in the world. In the UK, it kills more women than cancer.

All of the charities people represent and raise money for are worthy causes and if we have to put up with a little discomfort or pain to help someone else, then it’s all worthwhile.

  32. Mark Kimsey 07/05/2011 at 5:46 pm #

Just finished the Coast to Coast with five others to raise money for Mount Vernon Hospital Marie Curie Cance Wing.
Next month – London to Brighton.

  33. Peter 08/05/2011 at 6:29 am #

I did London to Paris in 2009 for ReCycle and John O’Groats to Lands End in 2010 for Marie Curie and Diabetes UK.

I am now back in NZ and just looking at the logistics of doing an End to End of New Zealand.

  34. Gary Walder 08/05/2011 at 1:17 pm #

From August 21-28 I’ll be attempting to do what Hannibal did, and that is cross the Alps. But while Hannibal, at the age of 28, was at the peak of his physical and mental prowess, I’m middle-aged, overweight and suffer from mild depression. And I’ll be travelling by mountain bike, not elephant.

The aim is to ride from Garmisch in Germany to Lake Garda in Italy, covering a distance of 400km and ascending a total of 10,000m. Any money I raise will go to The Mental Health Foundation.

I’ve not yet set up the Virgin Money Giving page but when I do I’d be happy to let you know. I’m going to need all the support I can get!

  35. philcycle 08/05/2011 at 6:42 pm #

Did lots of charity rides some years ago, but found raising sponsorship so difficult (always asking the same people; time consuming; difficult collecting pledged money) that I gave up.
Now (selfishly?) ride for my own pleasure, and am quite surprised that people are shocked that I’m not doing it for a charity! You can’t win.

I’ll be doing Book Aid International’s Bike for Books this year – London to Burwash (the home of Rudyard Kipling!) on the 4th September. Did Bike for Books with them last year (a beautiful, and hilly!, 50 miles from Surrey to London) and it was fab fun. And it was much easier than I’d have thought to raise the money too! http://www.bookaid.org/site/getinvolved/bike4books_2011.htm/

  38. Liz 24/05/2011 at 2:29 pm #

I will be doing the Hove to Hove on 10th July 60 miles. On bank holiday Monday 30/5/11 i will be cycling 50 miles in aid of Lord Whisky animal shelter in kent.
